Ringing in 2011!

Tonight we'll be ringing in 2011 with family so I won't be able to post a formal blog. I did want to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy new year!

2010 was probably the best year of my life to date. We accomplished so much, had so many wonderful joys enter our lives, and best of all, continued watching our beautiful Angelica grow. I'll miss you, 2010, but I can't wait to see what 2011 brings!

Thanks to all of you for your support this past year. I have some neat things coming in 2011 so stay tuned!

Have fun and be safe tonight!

Angelica and Potty Training: An Update

Another potty-training post! If you don't want to read about peepees and poopies, stop here! :)

Angelica continues to amaze us with her potty training ability! She is still not getting her poopie in the potty, but we have been about five days without a peepee accident..including sleeping in her undies the past two nights. At daycare they told me they put her in a diaper for her nap and she peed in it, but I wonder if they had let her go diaperless if she would have held it until she woke up? Either way, I'm so proud!

Much to my surprise, she's started to prefer to use the "little potty" rather than going on the regular one. It was the opposite when she first started potty training. I guess at some point we'll have to make that transition, but she empties her own little potty into the big one so for now I can't complain!

One cute story...I guess at daycare they call underwear "panties" (we call them underwear or undies at home) and her teacher told Scott on Monday that every time they tell her to pull her panties up, she says, "No! I wear UNDERWEARS, not panties!"

While I am proud, it's kind of bittersweet. This is really the last little bit of babyhood she had left and we're saying goodbye to it. I wonder how long before I get bit by the baby bug again...haha.

Our Debt Free Christmas (and a cat update)

One thing I wanted to blog about earlier and didn't get to because of all the household illness was the fact that we had our first debt-free Christmas! By "debt-free", I don't mean that we are completely out of debt -- quite the contrary, it's a work in progress but we are getting there. But, I'm proud to say that since July of this year, neither of us have pulled out and used a credit card for anything, Christmas gifts included. Everything has been paid for in cash. As in, except for things we purchased online, the cash was taken out of the ATM and used for purchases.

Back in October, I looked over our finances and set a reasonable budget for Christmas, and we stuck to it. And it was hard. We're still paying for the bills of past Christmases (you know that 12 Pains of Christmas song...you know, "Five months of bills!" Well some of ours are going on five YEARS. Yikes!) so we knew better than to go over budget. We focused on Angelica having the best Christmas, getting something nice for each of the other kids in the family, and making sure we could get at least a little something for each other and the adults. It meant not buying the gifts for everyone that I wanted to. (Honestly, I love giving gifts more than getting them.) But next Christmas we'll be able to do so, so much more for everyone because hopefully by then, the majority of our debt will be gone.

Sticking to our Christmas budget and paying cash also meant that when my poor kitty Mindy wound up at the animal hospital on Christmas Eve, we didn't have to put her bill on credit because we had an emergency fund in place. It took almost our entire emergency fund...but that's what that's there for. It broke our hearts to see her so, so sick but, as Dave Ramsey says, the emergency fund turns a crisis into an inconvenience. We had the funds to pay for the bill and could instead turn our concerns and worries toward her recovery.

Speaking of Mindy, she's making progress. She's able to stand on her own and walk again. She's still not quite eating on her own, but the vet thinks it may be because of her ear infection making her dizzy so they're cleaning out her ears today and I hope and pray she starts eating after that.

Last night Angelica looks at me and says out of the blue, "Where's Mindy?" I told her Mindy was still at the doctor, and Angelica said, "Yeah! The doctor is going to make her awwww better an' she come home!" She absolutely loves that cat...just a half-day before all of this happened, Angelica was snuggling her and saying, "Aww, Mindy! You cutie! I love you!" And Mindy, being the sweet cat she is, just took it in stride when she got her tail tugged or when Angelica tried to pick her up. So when Scott found Mindy in the state she was in, my heart was breaking thinking that we may have to say goodbye and explain that she went to kitty heaven to our daughter (because when you see an animal unable to walk that's the first place your mind goes).

Just to show how much my girl loves her cat, here's the two of them together. You can see how tolerant this kitty is of Angelica. This was over the summer, hence the tank top, shorts, and sandals. Ahh, those were the days.

And don't worry, no cats (or toddlers) were harmed in the taking of that picture.

The Sickies

Boy has the sickness hit us hard. When we got home last night, I was still voiceless and getting congested, and Scott had a fever and a bad cold. We got Angelica to bed, cleaned up a little, then went to sleep ourselves.

Just as I was finally drifting off (about 2am, I was having a hard time sleeping), I heard Angelica throw up. So I went in and she was just covered from head to toe and wailing. So I stripped her down, stripped the bed down, bathed her and brought her into bed with us...where she threw up again. So I stripped down our bed, wiped her down, sent Scott to the couch and spent the next five hours holding her head while she threw up over and over. She finally collapsed into my arms and fell asleep. Poor baby had nothing left in her stomach and no energy to sit up.

Let me tell you, you have not experienced parenthood until you've held your sobbing, scared two year old against your chest while she pukes all down your arm and chest...and realize later that it didn't even phase you.

She woke up around 9, disoriented and went and fell asleep in the hallway so I moved her to her bed and rubbed her back until she fell asleep. And then we both slept until 1:30 this afternoon.

Poor baby. She's had a couple of small tummy bugs but has never been that sick before.

Fortunately, today she's back to her old self. She's said a few times that her tummy hurts, but she hasn't thrown up. She's eaten soup and drank ginger ale and even snuck a chocolate while I was busy working on the vomit laundry.

Now if Scott and I could just get better...

Merry Christmas!

Hope everyone had a fantastic Christmas this year! This was Angelica's third and by far my most favorite with her because she really "got" it!

In reality she got to have three Christmases. We spent yesterday at my parents' house for Christmas Eve dinner. My sister's family, including her in-laws (who are also like family to us) were there. It was a great afternoon with good food and good company. Angelica got to open gifts from them while we were there and just had a blast! It was amazing to see her so excited.

Today we had our Christmas morning with just the three of us and it was amazing. Angelica had about 20 presents and it took about 15 minutes for her to rip through all of them. Some of the things "Santa" brought were a Dora table and chairs, a Dora storage system for her room, an easel, a Talking Woody (from Toy Story), a collection of Disney Princess dolls, and a rocking horse.
I also have to add here that Scott got me THE most thoughtful gift ever. We have been together for almost 10 years (in March it will be 10) and he spent a day collecting mementos from our first date...like a receipt for a toll fare from a bridge we drove over, sand from a beach we walked on, a bowl that we used at his grandparents house, a ticket stub from the theater we went to, and a menu from the restaurant where we had dinner. Sometimes I forget what a thoughtful man I am married to. The gift cost almost nothing but meant the world to me.

Anyway, after Christmas morning was over, we drove up to his grandparents house and had Christmas dinner together...that entire side of the family was together for the first time in over three years so it was great! Angelica got to tear into more gifts and had a blast with her Aunts Tarah, Shannon and Jennifer, who she rarely gets to see but loves dearly. She ate dinner and then passed out on the couch until Scott's grandma, uncle, and cousins got home, and then she got to tear into more gifts.

Lest I forget to mention, we also went to Christmas Eve services at our church last night and it was great. Though it's a liberal church, it still covered the meaning of Christmas from a child's perspective, having the children act out the shepherds journey to meet baby Jesus. Since it is a church of liberal faith, the service's message focused on the beauty and promise that the miracle of birth brings to us all.

And with that said, if you could all keep our kitty Mindy in your thoughts and prayers we would appreciate it. Yesterday it looked like she would recover, but today the vet called and she is not progressing as well as they would like. She's old and has lived a happy life, but we would love for her to recover and come home.

So as to not end on a sad note, Angelica got both Woody and Jessie and they have been the biggest hit so far, though she genuinely loved everything she got and I'm sure she will rotate favorites (don't they always)? We also got some incredible gifts from our families, but most important was the time we spent together.

Next we have my nephew's 4th birthday to look forward to...can't believe that beautiful baby boy has grown up so fast!

Finally, thanks to all of you who read and comment on this blog! Your support has meant the world to me and I love reading your blogs as well.

Merry Christmas to all!

Angelica and Potty Training

Warning: Typical mom talking about poopies and peepees to follow!

About four days ago we started officially potty training Angelica. And, being Christmas eve and all, I'm proud to say that so far, Angelica is giving us the gift of using the potty this year!

Day one was rough...lots of accidents. She was really reluctant to sit on the potty, but did like the underwear.

Day two...much better! We put her on a timer system and asked her if she needed to go every 30 minutes. Still a few accidents, though.

Day three...we were able to discontinue the timer system half way through the day! She also wore underwear for her nap and woke up dry. By the end of the day she was going to the potty on her own! The only accident was a poopie one.

Day four (today) is going great! We had to rush my cat to the vet this morning (she's being kept for observation but looks like she will be okay) but Angelica did great! She held her pee until we got there and used the potty there twice! And as we were heading out for Christmas eve dinner she voluntarily peed before we left the house.

Super baby status continues! She is super easy to potty train! Now, if we could just get poopies in the potty we would be set!

Wordless Wednesday: Santa Land 2010

Last week I posted pictures from last year's Santa Land. Here's a few from this week's, though not as good...it was raining so they moved it indoors and it was CROWDED and not really possible for me to maneuver to get good shots of her. She also got the most awesome gift from "Santa's Elves" as you'll see at the end! (Thanks to my special elf friend for picking the perfect gift for Angelica!)

Angelica's First Sleepover

Last night, we left Angelica with my sister so we could attend a holiday party, and she spent the night! In two and a half years we have not gone to sleep in a house without Angelica being there. It was strange, but not nearly as strange as I would have thought!

The cool thing about it is that my sister's kids (Angelica's cousins) are her best friends. My nephew is 18 months older than Angelica, and my niece is two months younger, so together they make quite the trio! They go to daycare together, too. I feel really fortunate that the three of them can grow up together and be such good friends in addition to being family.

Anyway, back to my point! Angelica was THRILLED to be spending the night at what she called "Willyanna's house!" (My nephew is Willy, my niece is Anna.) She talked about it all day long, and even when we went to my company's annual "Santa Land" (a big Christmas event for the kids) where she got just about the coolest toy ever (A Dora the Explorer electric guitar!) she was still super thrilled to leave so she could go!

From what I hear, she got a good report card and behaved well (though she taught her OLDER cousin to be scared of bad guys in movies!) And it was kind of nice to have some freedom. Scott and I went to the holiday party for his department for a little bit, then we went out on a mini-date.

But we didn't realize how empty the house had been until she was back in it. :)

Five Question Friday -- Dec. 17

It's Five Question Friday, and it's also my last day before an awesome week off of work. The kiddo will also not be at school, and Scott will be off work as well, so we're going to have a fantastic week just being together as a family!

Now...on to this week's 5QF!

1. Do you regift...and if so, do you have a regifting horror story?

As a general rule, I don't regift. But I do have an awful regifting story! I once received a gift that I had given to someone else three years prior...still in the package...and BROKEN! Names and items remain anonymous to protect the innocent. I was still thankful for the thought, though!

2. Do you know what you are getting for Christmas this year?
I have no clue, and honestly, I'm not really worried about it. I have hardly given any thought to what I want for Christmas because I'm so excited to watch Angelica open her gifts. She really "gets" Christmas this year. In fact, last night she told Scott that he needed to be nice to me so Santa would bring him lots of presents.

3. Who brings the most gifts in your family, you or Santa?
This year I think it's going to be Santa. Since Angelica's SO excited about Christmas, we haven't wrapped any of her gifts or put them under the tree yet. They'd just be unwrapped. So I guess come Christmas morning she'll be getting a LOT from Santa!

4. What store do you love to by jeans from?

Truthfully, right now, I hate wearing jeans. I just have not been able to find a pair that I can afford that fits properly without sliding down or cutting into me. (I know Lane Bryant has the Right Fit jeans but they are out of my price range!) I live in my black yoga pants from Old Navy and I love them!

5. Christmas meal: Big, All Out Meal or Snacks and Apps?

We have a big old meal each year on Christmas Eve and it's amazing!

Pure magic

Last night was truly magical.

For those of you who have affectionate toddlers, this may seem like a weird thing to be excited about, but I actually got hugs and kisses from Angelica tonight. And not just one, either.

For the first six months of her life, she refused to let me put her down. For another year after that, she was glad to be put down to play, but would still snuggle. At about 18 months she decided she was too cool for that and by age two she flat out refused to give hugs and kisses to either one of us. Being a snuggler myself, it's kind of sad that my kid doesn't want to cuddle, but that's just who she is and I love her.

But tonight, she pretended to tuck me into bed on the couch and gave me kisses "goodnight". At bedtime, she called me back for a second hug and kiss as I was leaving. And then on my way out she kept blowing me kisses and saying "I love you!" Over and over and over.

These things just come in bursts, I guess. But it made me so, so happy. She is so amazing.

Thoughts on spirituality...

Today I'm breaking from my rule of "not discussing religion" to...well...discuss religion, in a way.

This past Sunday, the sermon given at the church we attend resonated with me. And parts of it are still lingering in my mind. And I wanted to share a little bit of it.

Rev. Schmitz first shared a story about her first ride on It's a Small World at age 5, and said this about it (the part in bold is what stands out most to me):
Some seemed a little bewildered when I told them it was going to make me cry. I was not known in the congregation for being particularly prone to weepiness. So, how did I know I would cry? I got weepy just looking at the pictures on the Internet in preparation for the trip.

Now why this reaction? Why this particular pilgrimage?

It has to do with a summer 45 years earlier when I went with my family to the New York World’s Fair. I was 5 years old. And that ride is just perfect for a 5 year old.

I grew up in a small town in southern New Hampshire. There was no, and I really mean no, ethnic or racial diversity. “It’s a Small World” was a picture for me of a different world. And better yet, the singing dolls from around the world were all happy and getting along.

Yes, the stereotypes and caricatures are a problem. But at age 5 that did not matter.
And at 45 the ride still called to me. I believe that this is because of the timing of my first exposure to it.

Had I been 3 or 8 or 23 or 38 it might not have mattered.

But at 5, it made a lifelong impact on what I expect of the world. I expect the world to be diverse and colorful and I expect people to be able to get along.

Childhood experiences can have a lasting impact.

Then at the end of the sermon, she says:

I shared my 5-year old “Small World” experience as a way of highlighting that childhood experience matters. Each of us can consider how our basic assumptions about the world have been influenced by experiences earlier in life. But we can do more. We can consider the children in our lives and in our world today.

Last week at an event called the Francis David Café, one of the things that we talked about was the gifts we brought with us from our early religious experiences. It was interesting to me that in our small group we had several examples of quite opposite experiences. For instance: One person recalled having examples of people in their religious community living their belief, examples of integrity. Another person recalled seeing the opposite and saw people behaving as hypocrites.

It raises the question: What examples will our children recall when they think back to their experiences here? How will they remember their parents, their teachers, the person sitting beside them in worship, or helping them in the pot luck line. How are their experiences of the world shaping them? What can we do to increase the chances that our children will have experiences that shape their world view for the better? Experiences that will make them stronger, more compassionate, more resilient in the face of all that life will bring their way. I close with an invitation to one last moment of reflection...

...A moment of reflection on how you might help create the opportunity for spirituality in our children. I invite you to think of a child close to you or to the children who are part of this congregation. For the well-being of all children, is the well being of the world.

(If you're interested in reading the entire sermon, it can be found here.)

I don't yet have a response to the reflection at the end of the sermon. But it is food for thought.

The paradoxical terrible twos

It hit me the other day how paradoxical the emotions you have can be when you have a toddler in the terrible twos.

Take for example this past Sunday. Angelica is so two years old, and the day went pretty much like this...

  • Wake up
  • Angelica wakes up.
  • Angelica screams to get dressed.
  • Angelica refuses to put clothes on.
  • Angelica runs around naked.
  • Mommy pins Angelica down and (gently) forces her diaper and clothes on.
  • Angelica and I spend some time playing and getting fully woken up. Scott asks her what she wants for breakfast.
  • Angelica screams for waffles. Scott makes one for her.
  • Angelica refuses to eat the waffles she so adamantly wanted 30 seconds before and demands cereal instead.
  • Angelica eats no breakfast! (Not because we took it away, but because she told me she doesn't LIKE waffles. Since when?? Little stinker :))
  • We drive to church. Angelica is being very cute and singing in the back seat. We sing along. She points out all of the Christmas trees and Santas and Frostys along the road the whole way there which is pretty much one of the cutest things ever.
  • Angelica screams to go to the church nursery.
  • Angelica screams that she doesn't want us to leave the nursery.
  • Angelica yells at us to "Go away!"
  • Church is over, we pick her up and head home (peacefully). We're all happy to be back together!
  • Ask her what she wants for lunch: "NOTHING! I no WANT lunch!"
  • Then: "I WANT PASTA FOR LUNCH! WAAAHHH!"
  • Home. Pasta. I cut coupons and prepare a list for the grocery store.
  • Angelica throws her pasta in my face and climbs down from her chair and tries to grab my scissors. And screams when I don't let her have them. (She yells, "I want to cut coupons my big self!")
  • Angelica goes down for nap. I go grocery shopping.
  • I get home, Angelica has refused to nap and is playing blocks with Daddy. She is very happy to see me. I give her big hugs and kisses.
  • I put the groceries away and then we go to the mall (complete with adorable cheez-its outburst) and have super happy fun time because she goes on a choo choo train with Mommy and thinks its the best thing ever. (And likewise, it warmed my heart to see her SO happy!) She also plays on the mall playground and then gets frooshpunsh (fruit punch).
  • We have to run into Target for something. Angelica screams "No WANT to go to Target!"
  • We finish at Target. Angelica screams "No WANT to go home, I just want to stay at TARGET!"
  • We get home. Scott cooks dinner. Angelica and I play and snuggle and enjoy a little quiet time.
  • Angelica eats her dinner and tries to eat mine too.
  • We finish dinner, Scott goes to run her bath. I take a minute just to answer a quick email. In that minute, Angelica grabs Scott's PSP (portable gaming system, for those not in the know), throws it across the kitchen.
  • I tell her to go to time out for throwing. She says no. She grabs Scott's (closed) can of soda. I grab for the can of soda and try to get it out of her hand and then in the struggle I realize that if she slips she could get hurt so I let go and gently sit her down.
  • Before I can even react, she hurls the soda can across the room...it bursts over and sprays all 12 ounces of diet cola all over our light blue carpet. Angelica laughs. I look at Scott and he looks at her and says, "That is NOT funny!"
  • I insist it's bath time. NOW. Scott cleans the carpet. Angelica joyfully climbs in the tub, we play and sing songs with minimal toddler outbursts. Then she gets bored and fills up her rinsing cup and throws it in my face for the third time (she's already been warned twice to keep the water IN the tub or bath time would be over.)
  • I pull her up out of the tub and she screams "NOOOOOO I just wanna stay IN!"
  • We brush teeth. She yells at me to leave. I tell her I have to stay to keep an eye on her so she's safe. She hits me. I give her the cup to rinse and spit.
  • We head to the bedroom. She refuses to get dressed. She runs around naked (again). She screams at me every time I get close to "go away". I grab her and force her into diaper and clothes and tell her to get her wubby.
  • We read stories. She tells me she had the best day ever and that she had fun at the choo choo and at the playground. She insists on giving me two huge kisses and hugs. She says, "Love you Mommy, goodnight, see you morning, has sweet dreams!"

I close her door, breathe for a second and say to Scott..."That little girl is the most wonderful little person in the world. I love her so much."

Having a very strong-willed two year old reminds me on a regular basis that it is possible for someone to be both the most frustrating person in your life and the most amazing.

McFatty Monday - Where oh where has it gone?

...the time, that is.
I haven't done much blogging about McFatty Monday lately, mainly because I am a huge slacker. Today I weighed in at 250.2. Kind of depressing that I've gained 8 pounds in just about a month. I have nothing to blame that on except for myself.

The good news is that I can only go forward from here. I need to stop being a wuss and actually go running again. I am a native Floridian, my heater has been running every evening since it started to dip into the 50s and I struggle to get out of bed each morning to get ready for work...much less get up early to run. To my credit, I did something to my knee the last time I worked out and it has been pretty sore since then, but I don't think it's an injury so much as it's the cold weather. (My knees always get sore when it's cold.)

Anyway, I hope all of you who are still doing McFatty Monday had a much better week than I did! :)

Not of the cheddar cracker variety

So this afternoon we took a trip to the mall. It was dark and gloomy and drizzly around town today so naturally it seemed like every other person on the road was a moron, completely devoid of driving skills.

As we're pulling into the parking lot, one of these morons nearly made an illegal left turn through a red light, almost t-boning our car, and Scott yelled, "Jesus!"

Angelica piped up from the back seat, laughing: "Cheez-its? No way!"

Ahh...we had a good laugh about it.

The BIG Self

I know that I've mentioned many times now how Angelica is an incredibly independent child. A few days ago she started using a phrase to assert her independence that cracks me up on a regular basis...even when she's being defiant and I'm getting angry!

It started with me trying to get her to take on some basic responsibilities (putting her dishes in the sink, putting her dirty clothes in the hamper, etc) by asking her to be a "big, big help".

So she bought into that really well...in fact, when she needs me to do something for her she asks, "mommy, you can do me a big big favor?" Plus, she was getting really good about helping me pick up at the end of the night. But the best part?

Now when she wants to do something all by herself, she no longer says, "I wanna do it!" Instead, she says:

"I need to do it my BIG self!"

As if she needs to remind me that she's getting BIG. :) I love this little girl!

Five Question Friday - December 10

It's Friday! This week seems like it's gone by really, really fast and I'm actually finding it hard to believe it's December 10th already. Most of the holiday shopping is done (at least for the kids -- I still have adults to shop for) and I'm really just excited for the holidays. Scott's last day of work before 2011 is today, too, so I am extra excited for him!

1. Do you open presents on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day?
When I was growing up, we always opened up gifts on Christmas Day. With Angelica, though, we usually have 2-3 days of gift opening. About six years ago, I started a tradition of having a huge Christmas Eve meal with all of the family who wants to get together and we open gifts on that day. It works out well now that my sister and I both have kids so that we don't have to travel all around the city on Christmas Day!

2. What is your favorite Christmas cookie (or candy)?
Alton Brown's sugar cookie recipe. I make these every year and dear lord they are amazing.

3. What's the worst Christmas gift you've ever received?
I don't honestly think I've ever gotten a "bad" gift. Aren't all gifts good? Even if it's not something you want or can use, you at least know that person thought of you and cared enough to get you a gift.

4. Christmas song that you love?
I've always loved The Little Drummer Boy. I know it's a very "Christian" song (as most Christmas songs are!) but I just think it's a beautiful song.

Angelica's also obsessed with Frosty the Snowman lately and I think it's adorable to hear her sing it...though if I actually have to watch Frosty again I might claw my eyes out.

5. How many trees do you put up?
Hahaha, in our tiny little house? Just one. It's fake and it's covered in plastic ornaments (with cats and kids, nothing else would survive) but I think it's beautiful. I should take a picture and post it!
